Timeline:

1956 - British-ruled western territory included into the Gold Coast, later renamed Ghana.

1960 - Independence.
1961 - Sylvanus Olympio elected as first president.

1963 - Olympio assassinated, he was replaced by Nicolas Grunitzky.

1974 - Phosphate industry nationalised.

1979 - Eyadema was elected for presidet

1985 - There was a series of bombings in Lome.

1986 - Eyadema re-elected.

1992 - New constitution approved.

1993 - Eyadema dissolves government, sparking protests and fatal clashes with police.

1993 - France, Germany, US suspend aid to press for democratic reforms.

1998 - Eyadema re-elected.


Background:
Togo is a small country that is bordered by Benin and Ghana. It lost one-third of its territory to Ghana in 1957. Togo gained its indepdence three years later in 1960. Gnassingbe Eyadema was elected as military ruler in 1967. He continued to rule into the 21st century. The economy in Togo is very dependent upon agriculture. The agriculture industry provides over 60% of the work force.
